The British Columbia Cancer Agency is an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority. BCCA provides a province-wide, population-based cancer control program for the residents of British Columbia and the Yukon. BCCA's mandate covers prevention and screening, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation and is driven by a three-fold mission:
- to reduce the incidence of cancer
- to reduce the mortality rate of people with cancer
- to improve the quality of life of people living with cancer
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) was created by the U.S. Congress in the National Cancer Act of 1937 and strengthened by the passage of the National Cancer Act in 1971. NCI has the mandate to: conduct and foster cancer research; review and approve grant applications to support promising research projects on the causes, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer; collect, analyze, and disseminate the results of cancer research conducted in the United States and in other countries; and provide training and instruction in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Over the years, NCI has evolved into the world's pre-eminent cancer research organization.
Canary works with NCI to encourage funding and support of early detection initiatives. Canary partners with NCI's Early Detection Research Network (see EDRN below) and NCI has recognized and supported Canary's annual Early Detection Symposium. In 2008 Dr. John Niederhuber, Director of NCI, will be a Canary Symposium Keynote Speaker.
The Early Detection Research Network (EDRN), is an initiative of NCI. It is a collaborative group with representation from dozens of institutions designed to help accelerate the translation of biomarker information into clinical applications and to evaluate new ways of testing cancer in its earliest stages and for cancer risk.
Canary and EDRN are forming a relationship where biomarkers discovered through Canary supported research are funneled to EDRN for validation work. The partnership specifically includes Canary and EDRN institutions working together on a large prostate cancer study.
