Second Annual Canary Derby Surpasses Goal

July 2007
More than 1,000 competitors and spectators gathered at Vancouver Island Technology Park in British Columbia on June 16 to participate in the second annual Canary Derby and "Techapalooza" community picnic. Last year's event obviously inspired others to step up to the challenge, as there were seven more teams - each speeding down the 400-yard track with their sights on the finish line and ultimately the winner's podium. There was a lot of "trash talk" prior to and during the race, but in the end, the car built by Schneider Electric posted the winning time.

This race wasn't just about the fastest car though. This year, everyone was working hard to raise the funds needed to purchase a biosensor for Dr. Brad Nelson's lab at BC Cancer Agency's Trev & Joyce Deeley Research Centre in Victoria, BC. This equipment will substantially reduce the time it takes to develop assays for the ovarian cancer biomarkers now being evaluated as well as the biomarkers for prostate cancer soon to arrive.

The weekend began with an intimate fundraising cocktail party organized by Laura Walsh and hosted by a generous donor of the BC Cancer Foundation. Even the sun made an appearance as speakers shared information about the progress made since last year's derby as well as goals for this year's event. "It is wonderful to see the energy and creative approaches the technology companies come up with to raise funds for such a great cause," said Michael Ball, CEO of GenoLogics Life Sciences Software and chair of the Canary Derby committee.

Race day found everyone watching the center of the big red thermometer move up towards the $100,000 goal mark set by the Canary Derby committee. Cheers erupted at the end of the day when GenoLogics Life Sciences Software was announced as winner of the team fundraising competition with a total of $13,368 raised, bringing the race total to $119,000. The funds raised from derby weekend activities continue to climb, with the ultimate goal of $143,000 to purchase the biosensor almost within reach.

This event was a tremendous success thanks to Michael Ball of GenoLogics, Heather Jones of BC Cancer Foundation, the Canary Derby committee, and the Island's vibrant technology community, including the many corporate sponsors. Next year promises even more excitement as the momentum builds.
