Aruna Gambhir: A Volunteer Who Leads with Passion

July 2007
Aruna Gambhir joined Canary Foundation as a volunteer in late 2004. But the word “volunteer” doesn’t come close to describing what she brings to the mission. Her initial reaction to hearing about Canary’s vision for cancer early detection was to think of the many ways that she could help the foundation achieve its goals. Driven by a passion that blends humor, insight, intelligence, and warmth, Gambhir now leads many aspects of Canary Foundation.
Gambhir has gained recognition for how she organizes the volunteer program, which has grown to nearly 200 individuals. She welcomes new volunteers, cultivates their interest, and helps place them at events and in the office. When professional services are required, she networks and targets her search to attract those who can provide pro bono work to help Canary in areas as diverse as public relations and information technology. But her good work for Canary doesn’t stop there.
Have you read our e-newsletter? Gambhir is the editor, guiding the entire process from article gathering to design to preparation for distribution. Visited our website? Gambhir has helped to keep vital information at the fingertips of constituents and supporters in the form of articles and science presentations. In fact, there are few Canary Foundation projects that have not been touched by her creative hand. Going above and beyond, she inspired and helped plan an art project with another organization, the Pacific Art League, where she serves as a board member. The project, called Beyond Cancer, gives voice to people of all ages who have been touched by cancer.
Canary Foundation strives to catalyze a major change in cancer early detection in the near future. Making this goal a reality takes the courage and passion of those who believe in the mission, and among those standing in front is Aruna Gambhir.
